Scribe Post for December 5th, 2008

Today in class we learned how to simplify equations with many variables. Mr. Harbeck taught us three steps to simplifying these kinds of equations. He also gave us homework but I’ll explain that to you later.

Variables AKA the letter
Constants AKA the integer

1st step: circle like terms
2nd step: group like terms
3rd step: simplify

Here are two examples he gave us: (sorry for no pictures from paint because I cant copy it and put it on this scribe for some reason)

6x + 9 +2x (circle the 6x and 2x)
6x + 2x +9 (this is where I grouped the like terms)
8x + 9 (this is the simplified version of the equation)

3t + 4u + 6t (circle 3t and 6t)
3t + 6t + 4u (the like terms are grouped)
9t + 4u (the simplified version)

Now our homework for today is on page 6 of the pink booklet.
I will do 5 questions for you from the top left corner box.
(Instead of circling I am going to underline the like terms)

E.6x + 9 + 2x
6x + 2x + 9
8x + 9
number 15 in the right column is the simplified equation for E

S.7 + 3x + 4
7 + 4 + 3x 3x + 11
number 25 in the right column is the simplified equation for S

O.8 + 2x + 7x
2x + 7x + 8
9x + 8
number 9 in the right column is the simplified equation for O

L.8x + 7 + 3x + 2
8x + 3x + 7 + 2
11x + 9
number 19 in the right column is the simplified equation for L

A.5x + x (both of these are like terms)
6x
number 4 in the right column is the simplified equation for A

Hope you guys enjoy my scribe.

The next scribe is Avery Medina.

Good job "Austin". I really liked the fact that your scribe included some of the questions from the homework. The only thing I could say to add is maybe put the number that corresponds with each question so that people can do the sentence at the bottom (although I suggest that people NOT do it because as usual the sentence is cheesy!). Also, you might want to include pictures to show just what you circle because if somebody was away they might not understand the whole circling thing. I know that you said that you don't know how but the reason is that you don't copy/paste the pictures. What you do is this:
Step 1:Save the picture to a place where you'll remember where it is (I suggest your desktop or a folder set aside for scribe post pictures)
Step 2:Go to google and click my account. From there find the "Blogger" icon and click it. Next click on "Math Blog 817".
Step 3:Click on the word "Edit" next to your scribe post's title.
Step 4:At the top of the area where you write your scribe there is an icon that when rolled-over (when your mouse is on it) says "Picture".
Step 5:Select Browse and find your picture. Once you've done this, click done.
Step 6:Click and drag your picture (located at the top of the writing are) to the desired location. Voila!
There you have it! How to post a picture in 6 easy steps! Once again great scribe and remember how to post pictures. ;)

Hi Normy. I don't really see any mistakes, but I think you could play around with your possibilities when scribing. Add a video, links, change the font size and stuff. It would make your scribe a lot more attractive.

Hey "Austin", Great Job. For your next scribe i think you should add some videos or links and more color to make it interesting. But Great Job!
