Pythagoras

Friday, February 20, 2009
Vocabulary:
R.A.T. - Right Angle Triangle
Hypotenuse- The longest side of the triangle, oppisite of the right angle.
Legs-They create the right angle and are shorter then the hypotenuse. Greek - A person that was born in modern Greese.
Theorm- A formula or theory that can be proved

Pythagoras is a man who was "Uber" Smart. He was a greek math mathematician. There are people who think that Pythagoras is a myth because we have no main source that proves that he existed.

Mr Harbeck had artifacts in his bag, and one of the artifacts was a2+b2=c2.
a2+b2=c2 is the pytharorean theorm and this is an example.
.

Another artifact that he had in his bag was this

R.A.T. The artifact that Mr. Harbeck had in his bag was a right angle triangle. The triangle has a 90 degree in it which is the little square in the triangle. If you put the angles all together the triangle eaquls 180 degrees.

Mr harbeck also had this in his bag.

This artifact is a square. You might think oh but isant a square supposed to be even ? That is what the lines show, they show that the each of the sides are eaqul. This square you see has four 90 degree angles so the whole square eaquls 360 degrees. The proof to get this would be 4x90=360.

The reason these artifacts are linked are because they all connect to this thing called a Pythagorean Theorm. They also connect to Pythagoras because he is the one that discovered this theorm.
Yes, We care about Pythagoras because he is the one who found the Pythagoras theorm or formula.

So in class on February 3 we wrote a test on problem solving. Here are 4 of the questions of the test :

Pay it forward

Thursday, January 1, 2009
Before the grade 8 students were sent off to go have fun over the holidays, we watched a movie. And this wasn't a movie like "Bolt" or "Twilight." This movie was called "Pay it Forward." You may think whatever, why would you watch that? That was what i was thinking when Mr Harbeck turned the movie on. But as we got into the movie, it really did touch me. The movie was about a boy, he was about our age. He got to class one day and his teacher gave the whole class an assignment, they were to do acts of kindness for people without expecting anything else in return. I really got into The movie got me thinking how we have it so good, compared to some other people out there. It got me thinking about how ungrateful I am for the stuff I have. After watching that movie, it hit me, that we are lucky just to have food into our belly's for the holiday season. So after watching the movie, we were given an assignment. We were to "Pay it forward". The grade 8 Sargent Park students were supposed to make a difference in someone's life this holiday season. We were to do random acts of kindness, just because.

How I payed it forward: My first act of kindness was when I babysat my older cousin's kid, Anthony. I watched him for the whole day, so that my cousin could go out to the gym and relax. I had a fun time watching him. It was fun watching him, even though I do babysit Anthony often. When my cousin came back to the house to pick up Anthony , she was offering me money for watching him, but i told her it was fine and just to try and make a difference in another persons life. She just laughed at me and said, " Ill try make a difference but, it isn't as easy as you think it is." But I told her to try her best because after all it is the holiday season.

How I payed it forward
: So my second act of kindness was to shovel in front of my neighbours garage. I felt better about it knowing that, I was helping out because, my neighbour has had 2 heart attacks and is an older man. So my neighbour cannot shovel. I shoveled for about an hour to make sure that in front of their garage was clean and had no snow in front so that the car could get out of the garage. I left a note in their mailbox telling them about the assignment. I left the note anonymous, so that they would not have to feel like they would need to pay me back in anyway.

How I payed it forward
: My third act of kindness was also a babysitting act. I babysat my little cousin, Sydney. I babysat her for about a couple of hours. While my auntie took a couple " Me hours" sleeping and relaxing. Together, Sydney and I watched "Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus". It was a real fun act of kindness, and I really enjoined spending time with my little cousin and playing with her. I am glad I got to also put a smile on my aunties face, because she got a couple hours of quite while Sydney was being taken care of.

Today in class our assignment was to correct our tests that we had yesterday. Here are 5 of the questions that I had problems with.

9a+5-4a
*How to get the simplified answer:
9a+5-4a
9a-4a+5
5a+5
What I did was first I grouped like terms. I did 9a-4a and the answer I got to that question was 5a. Second I added a five to positive 5a. So when you do that your answer would be 5a+5.

3x+(4x+6)5
*How to get the simplified answer:
20x+30+3x
20x+3x+30
23x+30
The first thing I did to get the simplified answer was multiplied 5 by 4. When I did that I go 20x, then I multiplied 5 by 6.I got 30 when I did that. So I had 20x+30+3x. I added the like terms, which gave me,23x then I brought the 30 down. The simplified answer would be 23x+3o.

Six less then a number divided by 4 is 25
n-6/4 =25

Six less then triple a number is nine,
3n-6=9

the difference of a number and six times 4 is 32
6x4

n =32

Chapter # 1
Integer Poetry

Adding Integers : Tanka

We add integers,

Positives and negatives
If they are the same
Just combine them together.
Different signs,cancel each other

Subtracting Integers : Cinquain

Subtracting
Minus,reducing.
Diminish,difference,less than.
We add the opposite.
Take away.

Partitive Division : Free Verse

How many equal parts are in,
4 groups when we have 12 ?
Julien knew that the answer to this was
to use partitive division

Julien drew 4 groups onto a paper.
and shared 12 so we could all have a piece,
and share together
Julien shared between himself,Timmy and Phill
2 for me,
2 for Timmy,
and one for Phill.

Oh wait we all like to share,
So Phill get another piece right ?
Julien is totally right.
so it really should be
2 for Timmy
2 for Phill
and 2 for Julien
That's me !

Yes now that sounds about right.
Sharing is caring,
isn't that right?
Yes it is.
Congratulations Julien !
Know you know you are right !

Quotative Division : Free Verse

How many parts of 5 fit into 10?

Its just a simple question,
that we ask ourselves,
when we do quotative Division.

Because Timmy asked himself,
dose the top fit into the bottom ?
Just like super he realised that,
sometimes there's a left over.
A whole piece is cut into 10Th's
Just so we can share.

Timmy could not figure it out.
How many times dose 5 fit into 10 ?
Mrs. Mitchel said,
"Timmy think of pie."
You get 2 pieces,
Jenny gets 2 pieces,
Nick gets 2 pieces,
Belle gets 2 pieces,
and so do I.

Make a Rule : Free Verse

In our class room we created a rule
We Proved to the class and created 2 rules
Number one shows us,
that when we multiply an odd,
amount of negative integers
your product must always be a negative.
Well what happens when we multuply ,
with positives ?
Well here goes rule number 2,

When we multiply an even amount,
of positive integers. Your sum must be
a negative ?
No you goof head.
Your sum must be a positive.
If you remember these 2 rules,
Just remember that we did the work,
and your will be sure to ace your homework,
You will really be great !

Chapter #2
Combinding like terms

Here is my script, for chapter 2.

Jobelle: Hey me and you are still having friends over right ?
Nick : For sure, I cant wait. All of us friends, just hanging out and having a good time. I'm excited.
Jobelle Lets make this interesting, are you down for a bet ?
Nick : Bring it on! You know that I am all ways going to win, so beating you again, i don't know why you all ways try. But I'm in the mood, so bring it on little Jobelle Bell !
Jobelle Okay well here's the deal, we both get 5 minutes
Nick : I already know I'm going to beat you , what do we have to do stay in a pool of cold ice for 5 minutes ?
Jobelle:No, stop being a fool, so we have 2 questions that we have to solve, math questions.
Nick : HA maybe you might beat me you nerd. Yeah right, in your dreams.
Jobelle: Okay so we have 5 minutes each question and who ever is right can just hang out at the party and get served like a king by the loser.
Nick : Dude I am already a king, but hey, getting treated extra special would be even better.
Jobelle: Yeah I wouldn't be so cocky if i were you, Nick. Nick : Okay so when are we doing this ?
Jobelle: When do you want to do it ?
Nick : As soon as possible, Because truly I need a back rub.
Jobelle: Okay, here's the first question. n+3-5n+12
Nick :Easy, as b-boying for me.
Jobelle: Just be quite and do it.
Nick : Okay fine

Jobelle: Okay well I am done!
Nick : Wait, you said 5 minutes, its only been 3
Jobelle: Okay
Jobelle:Well five is up.
Nick : okay. Jobelle Well I have -4n+15
Nick : Well I have 6n+15. So dude, who is right ?
Jobelle I am because look n+3-5n+12, first what I did was n-5n, that equals 4n. Next I did, 4n +3+12. I brought 4n down and added 3+13 together that's 15. So then you are ended up with -4n+15
Nick : Well I have 6n+15. My steps were n+-5n, and that gave me -6n then i added 12 and 3 together and i got 15. so that's how i got it.
Jobelle No that's wrong, that is a minus sign. So I am right. So one Jobelle. Zero Nick. The next question is 2+4(3n+8)

Nick: Well I am done now ! My answer is 34+18n.
Jobelle Well I have 12n+10. Nick: I am confident about this one so ill explain first. Well first I did 2 multiplied by 3n and I got 18n. Second I did 4 multiplied by 8, and when you do that you get 32. Then you just bring down the 2. So now I grouped like terms and I got 34+18n.
Jobelle: Well I got 12n+10 because I multiplied 4 by 3n. Next i added 8 and 3 together. So that gave me 12n+10.
Nick: No you are wrong. You have to multiply both, 4 by 3n and 4 by 8. Then you would have to just bring the 2 down, and then group like terms.
Jobelle: Okay. So I guess its one Jobelle and one Nick. So what are we going to do ?
Nick: I don't know. Hey lets just leave the questions and just both have fun! It was fun doing those questions, we should do it again sometime

Here is my video, I hope you like it.

Chapter #3
Algerba

For chapter 3 our assigment was to make an integer video explaining how to do questions. We had 4 questions _________ and we were to show you how to solve for n. Here is the video Karessa and I created in class:

Sharmayne's Adventure Story

Friday, October 24, 2008
One day as Lilo was walking down the beach she noticed Stich playing with a pineapple out in the ocean. Stich began to play with it and throw it around. Then he noticed that there were numbers carved into the pineapple. The numbers read (-4)+(+4)=. Stich began to paddle his surf board to the shore to find Lilo. Once he got to shore he screamed to Lilo , she came running immediately once she heard Stich calling her name. Stich showed her the pineapple, she was curios about it also because she didn't know what it was. Lilo and Stich began to walk home with the pineapple in Stich's hand and the surfboard in Lilo's. Once they got home they ran to Lilo's sister Nani, She said that the numbers were called Integers. Lilo went to Jamba and asked him if he could help her. Jamba was more then willing and showed her another cousin of Stich. His name was Integers. Jamba had him tucked up away, so he went on over to his drawer and pulled out a little marble like ball. He put it into water and up came a little creature that had glasses. Lilo immediately showed him the question. He asked Jamba for paper and began answering the integer question (-4)+(-4). This is what his paper showed:

The next day while Lilo was outside looking over the integer question she went to the mailbox because the mail man was there. He slipped in a pineapple with a new integer question on it. She read the question over and over until she couldn't make any sense of it. She then went to go find Integers who was sitting on the kitchen table having a coffee. Lilo said good morning to him and also said "Integers look what the mail man dropped off this morning." Lilo then showed him the pineapple with the new integer question. The integer question read (-2)+(+3)=. Integers then asked for a pen and paper and this is what it the piece of paper read:

Nani and David came home shortly after there walk down the ocean. Nani had a new pineapple in her hand. She said that while her and David were at the beach sipping Pina Colodas the waiter of the restaurant came and said that it was from a man who had dropped it off earlier in the morning. Nani said that she would give it to Lilo for her to solve. Lilo felt that Integers had done allot of problem solving for her already so he explained to her how integers were added. The question the the pineapple read (-7)+(+2)=. Because Lilo had Integers explain how to do it , She then solved the question on the pineapple. Her work showed this :

Lilo felt so proud of herself that she learned how to add integers. She was really excited for the next one to come. Sadly another question didn't appear for another 6 days. On the 6Th day another pineapple arrived. This time while Lilo and Stich were outside playing with her spoon dolls. Then Integers came and showed Lilo the pineapple. Lilo was really excited to get the question answered. She ran all the way home to go and get a pencil and her math notebook to get the question done. This time the question was (-2)+(+2), when Lilo was finished her notebook was filled, it looked like this:

Lilo,Stich,Nani,David,Jamba and Stiches's new cousin Integers were eating breakfast in the morning when Pliekly came to the kitchen table and showed them the new pineapple with a diffrent question on it. Pliekly said that the man from the juice shack came and dropped it off. This time Lilo said "Lets have a race ! Lets see who can do it the fastest, who ever gets the right answer to the question gets to have my peanut butter sand which." This time the question was (-6)+(-1).

Thericital Problity :
Therictal Problity is what is supposed to turn out.
eg. If you have 6 orange chips and 1 green chip. If we mixxed all of the chips throughly and asked you to pic one, you will be most likely to pull out a orange chip and not a green one.

Expermintal Problity :
Is when you actually perform the expermint to get expermintal results.
eg. There were 10 gumballs in a macine 1 red,2 green,3 yellow and 4 blue gumballs in a machine. They were mixxed throughly and then we pulled a gumball out. The gumball that we pulled out was a blue one.

Worksheet

1. Imagine that a gumball machine contains 1 red,2 green,3 yellow and 4 blue gumball that were throughly mixed before put into the machine. If you got one gumball from that machine, which colour do you think would come out ? Explain your awnser.
I think that a blue one would come out because the precentage of a blue gumball comming out would be 40 percent. Because that you have a better chance of pulling a blue gumball and not a red, green or yellow i choose a blue one to come out. But you still have to remember that this is a game of chance.

2. Suppose that after each gumball comes out, the gumball wizard magicaly puts another one of the same colour into the machine so that the gumball machine always has the same number of each colour of gumball. If you took 10 gumballs out of this magic gumball machine with the gumball wizard replacing your gumball each time, which gumball do you think would come out ?
Red 1,2 Green,3 Yellow, and 4 blue gumballs, because no matter what colour you pull from the gumball machine it is magicaly replaced by the gumball wizard. So it is just like not taking any gumball at all.

Here is a video i found explaining problity

Mean

arange in ascending order

The sum of all data
__________________
devided by # of data
the mean is less accurate

eg.
*3,8,8,7,2,10,9
2,3,7,8,8,9,10

47
___ =6.7
7
6.7 is the Mean of this set of data

Median

arange in ascending order
The middle number of a set of data
if there are 2 medians add them up and find the mean
it helps you find out if there is an outlier
eg.
*2,7,9,4,102,5
2,2,4,5,7,9,102

5+2=12
12/2=6
6 is the Median of this set of data

Mode

arange in ascending order
the most frequently occoring number in a set of data
you can have more then one mode
you may also have no mode
you have no mode if the data only consists of one number
eg.
*3,8,8,7,7,7,2,10,9
2,3,7,7,7,8,8,9,10
7 is the most frequently occoring number in this set of data.

Range

arange in ascending order
subtract the smallest number from the largest number
it will tell you if you have an outlier in your set of data
eg.
3,8,8,7,9,105
3,7,8,8,9,105

105-3=102
102 is the range of this set of data.

here is a video i found on Mean,Median&Mode
