Kevin's Scribe Post
Thursday, January 29, 2009
Today in math class, we were given sheets of papers that had 10 algebra questions on them. We had to only do 8 of those. For today's scribe, I'll help you with 4 questions of the 8, so you will only have to do four.
1. A certain number plus 26 equals 51. What is the number?
The number is __
Let N = number
N+26=51
N+26-26=51-26
N=25
Verify:
N+26=51
25+26=51
51=51
The number is 25
2. Three more than twice a number is nineteen. Find the number.
The number is ___
Let N = number
2N+3=19
2N+3-3=19-3
2N/2=16/2
N=8
Verify:
2N+3=19
2(8)+3=19
16+3=19
19=19
The number is 8.
3. Six times a certain number minus eight is forty. What is the number?
The number is __
Let N = number
6N-8=40
6N-8+8=40+8
6N/6=48/6
N=8
Verify:
6N-8=40
6(8)-8=40
48-8=40
40=40
The number is 8.
4. Terry has a certain amount of money and Rick has three times as much. If together they have $2.60, how much did each boy have?
They each had ___ dollars/cents.
Let N = Dollars/Cents
This one is different, so we must first identify what we know about each person.
Rick: 3N(We know that he has 3 times as much as Terry)
Terry: N (We don't know how much Terry has or anything about it)
3N+N=2.60
4N=2.60
4N/4=2.60/4
N=0.65
Verify:
4N=2.60
4(0.65)=2.60
2.60=2.60
They each had $0.65 cents.
That is all for today, I don't think we had any other homework.
