Skills Post # 1
One day In class Mr.Harbeck was teaching us about fractions and how 2 fractions can be the same, but one is more precise.
Question 1. 2/3 or 3/4
They both look the same. 2/3 is 4/6 simplified. One is more precise.
4/6 is more precise than 2/3. That is true because if you were to turn those to fractions in to decimals ... it would be.. 0.6666667 ( 2/3 ) and.. 0.66666667 ( 4/6 ).
4/6 is more precise because it has more place value.
1/4 is obviously bigger than 1/8 ... but why ?
If you look at the picture above , 1/4 is a bigger portion than 1/8. When you look at the denominator you see that 8 is bigger than 4 , so many people might think that 1/8 is larger than 1/4. But when you look at a fraction... the lower the denominator , the bigger the piece. What would you rather have.. 1 of 4 slices from a pizza or 1 of 8 slices from a pizza? 1 of 4 right? Because its cut into less pieces which makes each piece bigger.

Theroum: A Theory that can be proved.
This vocabulary is all connected by the Pythagorean theorum.
This artifact is a square. The lines shown are lines of simitry.

This artifact is a right angle triangle. I has 3 sides. side A & side B which are the legs. Side C which is the hypotunuse and also the longest side.
This is Harbecks Toy INC board game. It is made up of a square and 4 identical triangles. The center square has an area of 225cm². We have to figure out what the perimeter of the game board is.
So first we need to find out what the square root is , and that its 15cm. Now we know each of the legs is 15cm. Now we need to solve for the hypotenuse. So this is how we would do it ,
( 15x15 ) + ( 15x15 ) = c²
( 15x15 ) + ( 15x15 ) = c²
225 + 225 = c²
450 = c²

So hows everyone doing ?
I went to a hotel today like a Resort type thing , but just to go swimming it was fun.
I saw a llama! It was funny , it was like eating the leave from a tree then I like called it and it looked at me then started walking towards me. LOL , I dont know.
WELL , tomorrow im hopefully going to the beach .
SORRY , i cant put pictures on here because Im at an internet place , so i dont really know if its safe because these people can be like weirdos. (:
Ill bring back lots of pictures though.

Sooo , im in Peru .. At my aunts house.. in Lima .. which is the Capital of Peru.
It is SOOO hot here. I havent done much .. except buy some ice cream. YUM.
Im going shopping later.. i think. I WANT TO GO TO THE BEACH!

Hey guys! Hows it going!? Im having lots of fun here. Its so different! Its really humid and dry and the way people drive is CRAZY! They dont really drive in the lanes they just go where ever they want, its pretty funny actually. Its also weird at the same time because I havent seen an accident or heard of one yet! I havent gone to the beach yet , which is sad! I havent really done anything, but im going to do lots once I get to Ica! I will post some pictures later! I just havent got any yet. Lol , Ill make sure to take some today and post them!

Hey again! Lol , well its fun here! Tomorrow morning im leaving for Ica for about a week and a couple days I guess. I might not be able to go on the computer that much because my grandma doesnt havent one , but my cousin does . So whenever I go to my cousins ill go on.
So I havent really said much about Peru have I? Well I will.
Here in Lima they have a lot of the same fast food resturants as Winnipeg , like KFC , Burger King , McDonalds , Pizza Hut and they also had Payless Shoe Source here which I never would of guessed! I havent done much here in Lima because my mom was mostly shopping for her business, but when i go to Ica Im going to go to the beach , the pool , sandboarding and lots more! It´ll be fun! Well i miss you guys a lot. Ill talk to you soon!

Pay It Forward
Have you ever thought of helping someone out , without getting anything back? I know most teens think "Oh that's a waste of time!" But really it's just a nice thing to do, especially if someone has done something nice for you.
On the last day of school, before winter break all the grade 8 students watched a movie called "Pay It Forward" about doing random acts of kindness for people. We were given an assignment to do a random act of kindness ourselves, there were many possibilities.
For my random act of kindness I shoveled the backyard for my dad. My dad said he was going to go shovel the backyard so i offered to do it myself and he was surprised because when he asks me to do it i say that it's to cold! I told him i would do it because i had to Pay It Forward. He asked me what pay it forward was and i told him about our assignment, I said because i was shoveling then he should pay it forward somehow too and he offered me money, but i didn't take it. I told him to do something nice for someone else. I thought it was really cold outside so I dressed up really warm so I was fine. It took be about an half an hour to finish the shoveling, which isn't that long, but i still did it because my dad has done a lot!

Sally: I had a math test today! I think i did VERY WELL!
Herbert: What questions were on the test Sally?
Sally: Well one question was N+3-5n+12. Thats pretty easy!
Herbert: Well , yes it is... If you know how to do it. How did you answer it?
Sally: Well i got -6n+15 ! It was really easy..
Herbert: Hmm , that does seem right. Well wouldnt it be -4+15
Sally: Well how did you get that?!
Herbert: Well , its simple. What i did was , I put the 2 variables together, so it was n-5n which is -4n and then i did 3+12 which is 15 so the answer would be -4n + 15.
Sally: are you sure?
Herbert: well im pretty sure it's correct , I took Advanced math!
Sally: Well you must be right then , but i must of got the next question right! 2 + 4(3n+8) and i got 12n plus 10 as my answer
Herbert: Hmm , well then Sally. I think you need some help with your math! That's not correct!
Sally: WHAT! It has to be. I thought I did good in math. Can you help me? What would the answer be?
Herbert: Well the question was , 2 + 4(3n+8) right? Well i would of done.. 4 times 3n which equals 12n. Then i would've done 4 times 8 which is 32. then i would've done. So now that you have 12n and 32 you would bring down the 2 + so the question is now 2+12n+32 then you would add 2+32 which is 34 then 12n. So your answer now is 12n+34! Do you get it?

Hello! So today in class we were doing integers in standard form AKA, NO MORE TRAINING PANTS! In standard form we combine integers.
-8-(-2)+7-12
* Collect ( + ) and ( - ) together.
8-(-7)-3+(-5)
8+(+7)+3+(+5)
* Make it an adding question.-8-(-2)+7-12
-8+2+7-12 = -11
* No bracets ! ;0 UH OH! No training pants.
OR
-8+2+7-12
-20+9 = -11* Collect ( + ) and ( - ) together.

Dwight & The Evil Pirate Charlie Good
Dwight was a stealthy ninja from Nintegers island. He was on a quest to defeat the evil pirate Charlie Good, because he stole all their chocolate coins! He got a message on his Ninjcell, which was a ninja cellphone that Charlie was on the island of Happy Purple Monkeys. Dwight had to use his ninja skills to get to the island and find Charlie to defeat him and get all the chocolate coins back, but how would he do it? Dwight called up his friend Jimmy the whale, and got a ride to the island. Once Dwight was there he looked around for some clues and found a mysterious looking container that had buttons with numbers on the top of it, there was also a question on the top.
"(-4) + (+9).. what could this be? Well what if i owe Jimmy 4 dollars and I had 9 dollars... i would have, oh 5 dollars left!"
Dwight entered 8 onto the container and found another note that read,
"The pub, the ship, the 7 seas, all i need is my black eyes____"
"What could this mean?" he thought to himself...
He thought for a while what rhymes with seas... keys, please, then he finally got it,
"PEAS! Where will i find some Black Eyes Peas?"
Dwight climbed a high tree and looked around, he spotted a market! He jumped frantically and sprint off into the distance towards the market. Once he got there he asked where he could find black eyed peas and he was lead to them. He looked at all the jars and found one with ANOTHER question! (-8)+(-2), Dwight just knew the answer to it right away!
"Its (-10)!"
Dwight, looked down at the knob and just above it was a few numbers, He pressed 1 and the door opened! He jumped in and found Charlie Good with all the chocolate coins!
"HAND THEM OVER CHARLIE!"
" NEVER!" yelled Charlie, but it was to late, Dwight grabbed them and ran!
"COME BACK HERE! THERE MINE!!!!"
Charlie was very mad that he didn't get away with it, but he never really got away with anything.
Everyone was happy back on Nintagers island when Dwight came back with all there chocolate coins, Charlie Good would still try to steal, but he better watch out for Dwight!
