Fraction Post

Mhmn, this is are last blog post. Awe, I feel like grade 8 has ended. ): But anywho, we have to make a blogpost on Fractions. Here it goes :) .

Do you know what a Fraction is?
It is numbers split into parts with a numerator and a denominator. The numerator is the number on top and shows how many parts you have. The denominator is the number at the bottom and it shows how many equal parts there are in a whole. Here is an example 1/2.

Adding and Subracting Fractions
How to Add:
To add fractions you have to find the lowest common denominator. Then multiply the numerators with the denominator across from it. Next you add the numerators and leave the denominator as the lowest common number.



How to Subtract:
To subtract fractions you have to find the lowest common denominator and subtract the numerators, and if possible, you simplify at the end.

Multiplying Fractions
How to Multiply:
You simply multiply the numerators together. Then multiply the denominators together. If possible you simply it.



Dividing Fractions
How to Divide:
There are alot of ways to multiply fractions. You can use pictures to solve a question. You could also use a Ratio Table.

Who is He? What about him? Who cares? He is Pythagoras, a greek mathematician. Pythagoras is really smart, not only SMART, he is "uber" smart. He is also a philosopher from Greek. Pythagoras was the one that found out about Right Angle Triangles (R.A.T.). No one really knows if he existed or not. But he is important because his mathematical theories and formulas are still used today.




Here are defenitions to the vocabulary words:
Legs - The Legs are shorter than the Hypotenuse, and it comes out of The Right Angle. Each triangle always has two legs.
Hypotenuse - The Hypotenuse is the longest side of a triangle and it is opposite of The Right Angle.
R.A.T. - R.A.T. stands for Right Angle Triangle.
Greek- A Greek is a person who was born or who is living in Ancient or Modern Greece.
Theorem -Theorem is a formula or it could be a theory that can be proved.








One of the artifacts is the Pythagorean Theorem. The Pythagorean Theorem is the sum of the areas of the two squares of the legs, which is 'a' and 'b' and that equals the area of the square on the hypotenuse which is 'c'.







This artifact is known as a Triangle. But in the math world it is called a Right Angle Triangle, or R.A.T. The right triangle has a 90 degree angle, which is the little square in the side of the right triangle. The whole triangle is 180 degrees. This triangle has two legs, they are the two lines connecting the Right Angle. The longest side is the hypotenuse.







This artifact is just a plain square. The lines on each side shows that each of the sides are equal to the other. The lines are called "Lines of Symmetry." The square has 2 Right Triangles in it, that looks like the first artifact. This square has four 90 degree angles which means the whole square equals 360 degrees, and to get that you times 90 degrees by 4 which equals 360 degrees.

























Pay It Forward

For my act of kindness, I'm thinking of helping anonymous people like the elderly, children, and the homeless. Some of my ideas to pay it forward was to help at an old folks home, help at the Children's Hospital, babysit for free, volunteer at a Christmas cheerboard, shovel someone's driveway, do community service, do chores at home without being told, and to donate money, clothes, or toys. I thought about going to the Children's Hospital or Calvary Place. I'm going to pay it forward during the break.





What I ended up doing was I made cards with Abby, Arielle, Carrie, Gelli, Arielle, and Tracy. The cards we made were about paying it forward, explaining what pay it forward is, why we are doing it, and how others can help. We all participated and equally shared the work by thinking, writing, drawing, and coloring.

On the front of each card said, "Pay it Forward" and to read before thinking to even throw it out or something similar. If you think about it, do you think you'd read something handmade made by anonymous people in the mail? Would you throw it out without even reading it? I honestly probably wouldn't take the time to read it, but maybe if it said something like, Please read before throwing out." or "Before you even think of throwing this out, please read it." I'd probably read it. We also drew pictures on the front of the cards like flowers, cartoons, and forward symbols like the ones on a VCR. In the inside of the cards basically covered the who, what, when, where, why, and how. We also drew diagrams of one person paying it forward to three other people, each of the three paying it forward to three other people, and so on. We showed how it can spread quickly to many people and around the world. We also attached a lollipop to each of the cards to show our appreciation to pay it forward. We put the cards into mailboxes of unknown people.

I felt that I have done a good deed by spreading the message to others. I also felt like watching someone open their door and read what we had left in their mailbox and how they would react. I think the people whom I have given it to would have probably had a happy feeling reading the card and had a smile on their face wondering who had made the cards. I'm hoping that the people who received the cards actually read it and don't tend on throwing it out. I hope that they also pay it forward to help us spread the message.

Do I think that one person can make a difference? I know someone can make difference, it may not be a huge difference like to stop global warming but everyone counts. Even if that difference is very little, it will continue to grow no matter how small it may be. It is almost like a tree, it'll start out small and it will take time for it to grow, but in the end it is a large beautiful tree, and all the waiting really paid off. I think if you really believe in yourself that you can make a difference in our world and that you never give up, you will make a difference. No matter who you are. Age? Size? Culture? Ethnicity? That all doesn't matter, what matters is what is in you! Every little difference can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE! EVERY PERSON COUNTS!

Since NO ONE is doing the scribe I will.
Because we never had a scribe for the past few days.
Anyways, today we had a Math Test.
I'm going to be answering some of the questions from the test.

6x-(-3x)+2x-9
To answer this question you will need to change the "Uh ohs"
to a positive. Then combine like terms. Then add the same
terms together
.
6x+ (+3x) + 2x-9
6x + 3x + 2x -9
= 11x - 9

3x+2(5x-7)
To answer this question. You have to add +2 and -7. You get -14,
then combine like terms and add them together.
3x + 10x - 14
3x + 10x -14
= 13x -14

A number is divided by seven and then decreased by nine.



Six less than a number divided by 4 is 25.



These were some of the questions on the test.
Sorry, anyways there was no homework.
Except for the Chapter 2 script and xtranormal
thingy. Its due on December 19th.

To get the answer for your integer questions,

Chapter 2 - Combining Like Terms and The Distributive Property

Denver: Hey there, Sally. Are you doing your math questions again?
Sally: Yes, I am Denver. As a matter of fact, I only have 2 left.
Denver: Do you need some help?
Sally: Why, yes I do. The first question I have is n+3negative5n+12. For that question I got negative6n+15. Am I right or wrong?
Denver: Sally, you are incorrect. To get the answer to the question, you have to combine like terms. Then add each term. When you do that you get the answer negative four plus 15. The reason why you got your answer was because you changed the negative sign when you weren't suppose to. You were just suppose to leave it. You only change the negative signs. When there are two beside each other. But otherwise everything else you did was right.
Sally: Oh Denver, Thank you I see what I did wrong. Well the next question is 2 + 4(3n+8). For this I got 12n + 10. Did I get this one right?
Denver: Yes, you did Sally. Very good, you have learned. Anyways I'm going to get going. Just call me up when you need anymore help. Bye now.
Sally: Thank you, Denver and goodbye.

Dora and Boot's Integer Adventure :)

Dora and boots are at home and are bored. They decide to go kite flying at the top of the green hill. But to get their they have to complete integer questions. Dora and Boots have to complete four integer tasks. They start they're adventure.




Together Dora and Boots left the house. They went walking for a bit. Then suddenly they're first task came. They were walking under a tree then all of a sudden 3 vines came down. Boot's pulled down the middle one and an integer question came down. The question was (-4)+(+9) =. Dora answered the question with have and owe.



Dora and boots got the right answer and were able to get through. They walked and walked singing a song. Until they got to the bridge that an ugly old troll lived in. The ugly old troll said to them, "You can only get through if you answer my integer question." Dora and Boot's told the troll "Okay, we will." The troll gave them their integer question it was (-21) + (-52) =. This time Boots answered the question. Boots answered the question using a number line.



Boots got the right answer. So the ugly old troll let them by. Dora and Boot's were very happy that they only had two task left. So while they were strolling to get to they're next task. They were being goofy, and never saw Swiper trying to get they're kites. It was a good thing Boot's notice Swiper. So Boot's put his hand in front of Swiper and said, " Swiper no swiping" three times and Swiper went away. Boot's save his and Dora's kites.





After the commotion, they have reached their third task. Their was a door there, and it would only open if you answer the integer question the door knob tells you. The door knobs question was (+5) + (-7). This time Dora answered it. She answered the question using algebra tiles.






Dora got the question right and was able to get through the door with Boot's. While they were walking Boot's said to Dora " Only one task left ". Dora smiled at Boots, and then saw the final task. The final task was to get over the river. But to get to the other side of it, you need the vine hanging up on the tree. They're is a squirrel on the tree, and he has an integer question for Dora and Boots to answer. The squirrel gave Dora and Boot's his question. It was (-6) + (+8). Together Dora and Boots solved it using have and owe.




Dora and Boot's got the answer right, and got over to the other side. They flew their kites on top of the hill. After a while they decide to go home. But when they do, they have to go through the tasks again. But this time with different questions.

Dora and Boots got tired of flying their kites. So they decide to go home. But they dont want to go through the same why so instead they take a short cut. They only have two tasks to do, so they can get home. But instead of adding integers... Dora and Boots will subtract integers. And so, Dora and Boots go through the short cut and off to their first task. Their first task was to answer Swiper's question. Swipers question was (+2)-(-4)=. Dora answered it by changing it into an adding integer.


Dora got the answer right. They go on to their next task very excited because they will finally go home and rest. Dora and Boot's is final task was

Which Italian Insects Often Fall in Love?

1. Each time you spin this spinner how many likely outcomes are there?
likely outcomes = TOTAL POSSIBLE OUTCOMES = 10



2. Find each probability if you spin the spinner once.
a. P(even number)

= 4/10 because in the spinner they're are 4 even numbers and the total possible outcome is 10. You can also say 2/5 because it is the same as 4/10 it is just simplified. You can get 2/5 by dividing the numerator and denominator by 2. Lastly, you can say 40% because that is the percent of the fraction. You get that by dividing 4 and 10 which equals 0.4 then you x it by 100 and it will = 40%.
b. P(odd number)
= 5/10 because in the spinner they're are 5 odd numbers and the total possible outcome is 10. You can also say 1/2 because it is the same as 5/10 it is just simplified. You can get 1/2 by dividing the numerator and denominator by 2. Lastly, you can also say 50% because that is the percent of the fraction. You get that by dividing 5 and 10 which equals 0.5 then you x it by 100 and it will = 50%.
c. P("A")
= 1/10 because in the spinner there is only one "A" and the total possible outcome is 10. You can also say 10% because that is the percent of the fraction. You get that by dividing 1 and 10 which equals 0.1 then you x it by 100 and it will = 40%.


3. If you spin the spinner 100 times, about how many times would you expect it to stop on:
a. an even number b. an odd number.
It will be 50 for both, because it is based on 100 and there is only two possible outcomes. You get 50 by dividing 100 by 2 and it will equal 50.

Mean

- arrange the data in ascending order
- the sum of numbers divided by how many numbers there are in the data- w/ an outlier the mean is less accurate "average"
Median

- arrange the data in ascending order
- the middle number in a set of data
- if there are 2 middle numbers you find the mean of them
- great to use if there is an outlier

Mode

- arrange the data in ascending order
- most frequently used number in the data
- you can have more then one more or NO mode





- arrange the data in ascending order
- subtract the smallest number from the biggest number
- outlier = biggest number
