Multiplying Fractions

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Today in Math class, Mr. Harbeck gave us an assignment. He gave us a sheet of paper with word problems. You and a partner are supposed to answer all of the word problems and put it in Google documents, a picture or just blogger and send it to your partner. Here's our Google presentation:

Second Scribe Post for April 14

Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Today Mr. Harbeck told us to solve fraction word problems for homework. I'm going to show you how to solve a question and how to do it. We also did some adding with fractions that Nikki will show you on her post.

I'll show you how to solve the first question.

You also have to do the 4 questions that Nikki showed you for homework.
And if you dont know how to add fractions.. you can click here!

The next scribe will be... ALEX!!!!

Pay- It- Forward

Friday, December 26, 2008
Over the winter break, Mr. Harbeck assigned an assignment. He told us to do something good for one person and in turn ask them to pay- it- forward. The goal is to make a signifance in someone's life. Karen and I teamed up to work on the project together. Plus, this would be a great opportunity to brainstorm with another person.
We decided to assist Karen's Godfather in taking care of his daughter, Dana. We both loved kids and babysitting. We knew Karen's Godfather and wife were overwhelmed with deadlines and the readiness of Christmas. We told Karen's god father that we could sit for Dana while him and his wife have a day to themselves. They agreed to this and we had arranged to baby-sit Dana on December 23th at Karen's house.

When we babysat Dana, we did not know how she would react to us. Her cousin and her friend taking care of her without her parents, was a dramatic change for her. But luckily for us she got used to this arrangement and got used to being around us for a few hours. After our babysitting session, we felt kind of tired and at the same time contented that we did something good for someone to make a change in their life.
Later, when Dana's parents came to pick her up, they asked us how to pay us for all of our hard work. We told them instead of paying us money, they could pay- it- forward. They were suprised that we rejected the thought of payment and confused about what paying- it - forward meant. We simply told them that paying it forward meant that you had to do a good deed for someone-else and in turn that person would do a good deed towards someone else. They were first suprised on what we wanted in return, then they understood what they had to do to pay us back.
And yes, one person can make a difference. Whether your big or small, old or young, rich or poor everyone can do their part and make a change. If everyone does a good deed then passes it on, more and more people will have the passion to do a good deed. Everyone can be a good samaratan and make this world a better place.

Chapter 1: Integer Poetry

Adding Integers [Free Verse Poem]

I had come to my math class with my binder in my hands,
to learn the lesson that Mr. Harbeck had planned.
We had just finished probabilty,
I just hoped that the next lesson was within my ability.
So, I sat in my chair with an anxious look on my face,
I was wondering what unit would take probability's place.
Then Mr. Harbeck Shouted,"The next thing we are doing is..."
I thought, Oh no! We might be having a pop quiz!

Then he continued on with his talk about what we are doing today,
"Integers! We are doing integers! Hurray!"
I wondered what we were doing with integers this morning,

Mr Harbeck then said,"Guess what kind of equations I've been forming!"
Everyone waited for his important annoncement,
Then he began," We are doing addition in integers! Isn't adding integers an enjoyment?"

Then I wispered, 'yes!'
I loved addition in integers. I think that they're the best!
No need to pretend,
But I wish that it didnt come to an end!

Subracting Integers [Tanka Poem]
Subracting is hard
Additon is what to do
When you can't get through
in the question you change signs
to understand the question

Partitive [Haiku Poem]

The Partitive way,
Is easy when you get it,

If not it is hard.

Quotative [Free Verse Poem]

The quotative way,
The only way to get some types division done,
Without hurting your head.

Joysie's Joy-ful Rule of Multiplying Integers [Free Verse Poem]

Multiplying or Dividing
the rules are the same
If you have an even amount of negative integers,
your answer is always positve,
but if you have an odd amount of negatives,

then your answer will be negative.
Multiplying or Dividing,
The rules will always be the same.

Chapter 2: Combining like terms and the Distributive Property

XtraNormal

Nuki: Hey, Yuki.
Yuki: Hi, Nuki
Nuki: Is something the matter? You look kind of puzzled.
Yuki: It's just that I cant get the math problem that we were supposed to do in class.
Nuki: What's the question?
Yuki:The question is N + 3 - 5n + 12 n.
Nuki: What so hard about that? It's just algebra.
Yuki: Yea , I know but this question is pretty tricky...
Nuki: Let me have a go at it. My teacher says that i'm the best in math.
Yuki: Okay. But you have got to be careful. It's pretty confusing.
Nuki: Got it! The answer is 4n + 15.
Yuki: 4n + 15??? Is that really the answer? When I solved it , My answer was negative 6n+15. Can you show me how to simplify it?
Nuki: Sure. First you have to re write the question. You have to put the constants together and the variables together. But remember to bring the signs that are in front of the variable or the constant. Then you add the variables together. And add the contants together. And there's your answer.
Yuki: Wow, Nuki. You sure are good at simplifying algebra questions.
Nuki: Don't mention it. That's what friends are for.
Yuki: And since your so good at math, do you mind helping me with one more question?
Nuki: Sure, Yuki. What's the question?
Yuki: The question is 2 + 4(3n+8)
Nuki: I remember how to do these kinds of questions! I'll have it done right away. 'Pauses' Done! And the answer is 34 + 12n.
Yuki: I thought that the answer was 12n + 10. I guess I dont know my algebra. Want to show me how to do it?
Nuki: You bet ya. In this question, you have to multiply. The the constant is beside the letter without any thing in between it, meaning only one thing.. multiplying! You have to multiply the outside constant with the constants in the middle. One at a time of course. You start with the one on the left then go to the right. After multiplying, you have rewrite the question without the brackets and the constant that in front of it. After doing that, you have to add the constants. And then you get your answer.
Yuki: Wow. Thanks Nuki. You really helped me understand better algebra.
Nuki: No problem. I'm always happy to help you.

Chapter 3 : One Step Equation Solving
In this chapter you will learn how to solve one step equations. First you have to learn I COB V:
Isolate the Variable by
Canceling using the

Opposite
Balance and

Verify

Here how to do it:

Addition
Subtraction
Multiplication
Division

Scribe for November 24

Monday, November 24, 2008
Hey, Everybody! Today in class we did the last quadrant in our "barn".

The quadrant we did today was +-. Our question for today was positive 6 divided by negative 2.

First of all we had to write the question in the 4 ways we know how.

Next we have to write out the 2 statements that we know.

We found out that the quotative and partitive ways do not work because we cannot make groups of -2 when we have 6.

So, we found another way to solve this question. By using .... multiplicative inverse! This will solve the question without grouping the integers.

Therefore, our answer will be negative three.

Homework

For homework, we had to do page 7 in the green booklet. Questions 10-17.

Mr. Harbeck Told us to:

And for those of you who need a little jump start in your homework, I will get you started with a few questions.

And for scribe tommorow, I choose.... Kim C

Today in class we learned how to not to use training pants! Mr.Harbeck gave us a new green booklet. The integer questions in this booklet are written in standard form. He told us that we have to combine the integers to solve them. Here's an example:

When do you add oposites? When there are "Training wheels". For example:

Here are a few answers from the green booklet:

Part I

13. 6 - 9 = -3

15. 5 - 12 = -7

16. -8 + 3 = -5

Part II

3. 8 - (-4) + 7 - (-2) = 21

5. 12 - (-3) + 6 - 9 = 12

7. -8 - (-2) + 7 - 12 = -11

The Integer Boxes

It all started when Alyza and Lara was walking in the woods as they always did in the afternoon. They was just walking around when they stumbled upon this box.
"Should we open it?" asked Alyza.
"I don't know... It could be something horrible...." Started Lara.
"... or it could be something amazing!" Said Alyza excitedly.
As they thought about the mysterious box.. It started to open. The two girls stared at the box in amazement. Then they peered inside...
"Aww... there's nothing in here but a piece of paper..."Alyza said with a frown on her face.
"I wonder what it says.." wondered Lara as she picked up the tiny piece of ripped paper.
"It looks like some kind of math question..." Stated Alyza, who was now reading the paper.
"It says.. (+9) + (-3)."
"And I think that there is something on the back.." said Lara
The two friends flipped the paper, and read the writing on the back. Hi there my name is Clara, and I need your help. I'm trapped inside a room. If you solve this question then you will save me. I will reward you greatly.~Clara
"Do you think we should help her?" Alyza asked confused.
"I think I'm up to the Challenge. Are you?" Lara said.
"Yea! I really want to help her." Alyza said with sympathy.
"Kay, first we need to figure out what the answer to the question is." said a confused Lara.
"Wait! Didn't we do this in math class? Integers?" questioned Alyza.
"Yeah.. I think Mr.Harveck taught us this last class..." remembered Lara.
"Let's think it over..."
"Got it! It's (+6)! " shouted Alyza.
"Yea, I see. The answer is 6!" Said Lara.
"Didn't Just say that?" Alyza added.

The girls laughed at their own joke. While the girls were laughing, they didn't notice the large piece of paper that now took place of the note Clara had given them.

"What's that?!" Lara said once again. "Another paper?! Wierd..."
"It looks like a piece of a map. It looks like a secret hiding place. Hey! Clara..." stated Alyza.
"Yes..." Lara said."I bet it leads to our next clue."

SO the girls walked and walked, to their next clue...

"We sure have been walking long... Are you sure that were going the right way?" Asked Lara.
"I'm positive... we should be nearing the clue.. right about-"
Right when Alyza said that, Lara stumbled over a large object.
"I think I found it..." Lara said as the helped herself up.
"Good job, Lara." Alyza said as she opened up the box.
"Clue number 2 says: (-5) + (+3)"

"And according to my calculations, I think the answer is -2." ALyza said smartly.
"Yay! were one step closer to finding Clara!" Lara said with enthusiasm.
"And one more map piece to put together." Alyza said.
"And also more steps to take!" Lara said tiredly. "I think we should just countinue tommorow."
"No, Lara. I want to help Clara as soon as possible. Please.. I'm not doing this without you..."
"Okay then..." Lara said with a sigh.
So the friends venture towards the next clue. Once again they stumble upon the box.
"What does it say?" Lara asked.
"(-3) + (-24) ...." Alyza started.

"The answer is.. -27! Ha! Beat you, ALyza!" Lara said boastfully.
"Dang...." Karen replied.
Lara grabs the paper. It reads.. 8 paces north, 10 paces west, 65 steps north, and 12 paces east.
Almost here! 5 more paces.... Lara thought.
"This one says (+4) + (-5).."

Alyza takes out her pocket calculator and calculates the numbers... "It's -1."
"Wait.. you had a calculator all along and you didnt tell me? I was trying to do all the questions in my head! Do you know how hard that is?!" An annoyed Lara said.
"Sorry... I forgot..." Alyza said.
"Whatever. Let's just get on to the next clue." Lara replied.
Alyza was about to get her paper when the wind knocked it out of her hands.
"No!" they shouted as they ran after the paper.
"Get it!" Alyza said as she chased after the paper.

Minutes turned into hours as the girls ran after the frantic paper.
"Got it!!!" Shouted Lara as tired as ever.
"Finally!" yelled Alyza.
The two friends collapsed after they're high speed chase. Their relaxation didn't last long though as the wind knocked the paper out of their hands.
"Not again!" Alyza complained.
The girls watched the paper fly onto a tree limb. Lara got up and grabed the paper which now had some writing on it. The paper said,
Girls, can you get here soon? I over heard the guy that had captured me telling someone that he was going to kill me. He said I only got a few days to live. Please, Hurry. ~clara
"Oh no!" Lara said
