Today we learned how to divide Fractions and some of it's differences from multiplying fractions.

Such as,
what the two different math types say.
eg. 6 / 1/2 = this division question would say, how many groups of 1/2 are in 6
6 * 1/2 = this multiplication question would say 6 groups of 1/2

Homework:
We had 3 questions for our homework and we`d have to show how to do all of them 2 ways,
I`ll show photos on how to do the last 2 questions.

Im sorry that this scribe is a little late but Im going to make up for it by helping a few of you understand what we are doing in class these days. We are learning about multiplying fractions.

Now here are a few questions and answers for you.
(left=numerator right=denominator)
9/10  x  5/18=
You multiply the numerators then the denominators.
Now you simplify the answer
45/180 divided by 5 is 9/36
Simplify the answers even more
9/36 divided by 9 is 1/4
The final simplified answer is one fourth

14/3  x  6/7=
To help you answer this question you could switch the numerators because nothing would happen if you just switch the numerators around a little to make it look more friendly.
6/3  x  14/7=
As you can see I switched the numerators. 14 is now over 7 and 6 is now over 3.
6/3  x  14/7=2  x  2=4
The final answer is four.

Scribe post for April 23!(Fractions~)

On Thursday, we had a word problem about fractions...It was about Carrol Gardens and Flatbush. they both have an area of 100mx50m.

The question is...Who gets more hard top? Explain your answer... (pretend that you are explaining it to a person who doesn't know a lot about fraction...)
Carrol Gardens has: 3/4 playground 2/5 hardtop Flatbush has: 2/5 playground 3/4 hard top
Now we have to compare 2/5 to 3/4. But how???(I bet right know you could tell who had more hardtop right?but getting the answer isn't that important as to how you got the answer...)
There are a lot of ways to explain how you got the answer. Like...drawing a picture.



As you can see, 2/4 is more than 2/5. This is one way you can prove you're right...but is this really enough?Well if you can't draw... then you need to back up you answer with........decimals and

percents.
How do you convert fractions into decimals???
It's not that hard to do, just divide the numerator from the denominator.
Like this:
2/5
2 divided by 5=0.4
3/4 3 divided by 4=0.75
Then compare..
You can see that 0.75 is larger than 0.4(or 0.40 it doesn't really make a difference, it just makes it more easier to compare)
This it another way you could show your thinking...There is one more way I could show you how you can show your thinking.It's making the denominators the same.Like this:
So now that you know that 2/5(8/20) is smallar that 3/4(14/20) You can say that Carrol Gardens has more hardtop than flat bush because 2/5(flatbush) is smaller than 3/4(Carrol Gardens)

Sorry if I created my post 2 days later, but on Thursday we were assigned a question. The question was to see which park had more hardtop than the other (Carrol Gardens and Flatbush). The information contained that 3/4 of Carrol Gardens will be playground; 2/5 of the playground will be hardtop. For Flatbush, 2/5 of the lot will be playground; 3/4 of the playground will be hardtop. Both of the parks are 100m x 50m. Is one neighbourhood getting more than the other? Well, let's draw a picture.

Carrol Gardens:
If you divided Carrol Gardens into fourths of the park and colour 3/4 of it, that will be your playground. Then if you divided the playground into fifths and colour 2/5 of it, that will be your hardtop. The hardtop is 6/20 of the park.

Flatbush:
If you divided Flatbush into fifths and colour 2/5 of it, that will be your playground. Then if you divided the playground into fourths and colour 3/4 of it, that will be your hardtop. The hardtop will also be 6/20 of the park.

As you can see in the pictures, you'll have the same amount of hardtop. So, to the answer of my question... no, one neighborhood is not getting more hardtop than the other.
If my answer is incorrect, please feel free to correct. :)

Hi everyone! During yesterdays math class we were given a word problem about parks in New York City. The parks were Carol Gardens and Flatbush. People think that the children of New York City should get a place to play, so they decided to make some lots have a playground and some blacktop so that children were able to play blacktop games, like basketball for instance.

Both places have the same area, 100 M by 50 M. 3/4 of the lot will be playground and 2/5 of the playground will be hardtop. Our goal is to find out which park will have more hardtop. Note that both lots are rectangular.
Flatbush
The image above is a representation of the Flatbush lot. 2/5 of the whole lot is the playground. Above is a representation of how much of the lot will be playground. Now 3/4 of that 2/5 will blacktop.
We're trying to find how many times 3/4 will fit into 2/5 evenly, since 2/5 of the lot is playground and 3/4 of that (2/5) is hardtop. To do so we divide 2/5 by 3/4.
One of the most easiest ways to compare fractions is to divide the numerator by the denominator, or finding the decimal. 8 divided by 15 is 0.53 repeated.

Carol Gardens

Above is a representation of Carol Gardens. As you can see it is identical to Flatbush. 3/4 of the whole lot is the playground.


2/5 of the playground (3/4 of the whole lot) is hardtop.


The darker shaded area is the hardtop. We're trying to find how many times 2/5 can fit into 3/4 evenly, because 3/4 of the lot is the playground and 2/5 of that is the hardtop. To do that you divide 3/4 by 2/5.


1.875 is 15/8 in decimal form.

Which brings us back to our main goal... Which park gets more blacktop than the other?
As mentioned previously, one of the easiest ways to compare fractions is to convert the fraction into a decimal. Flatbush gets 8/15 of hardtop, or 0.53 repeated. Carol Gardens gets 15/8 of hardtop, or 1.875. So, Carol Gardens gets more hardtop than Flatbush. I hope this helps and that you're all well! (:

Today, we got a worksheet to do and I will explain 5 questions on page 42, mixed numbers. Okay the first question is 3 9/10 + 2 13/16=??? Okay first we add the whole numbers okay? Well let me draw this out for you! Sorry if my drawing sucks.. Okay now for the second question. The question is 3 11/12+ 7 3/8.
Okay, for our next question 1 1/8 + 11/13=? Okay first we add up the whole numbers which is only 1. Next lets add the fractions 1/8 and 11/13, to add them up we need a common denominator or same size peices. So we multiply 8 by 13. Which is 104. Now the fractions are 13/104 + 88/104= 101/104 now we add the whole number and our answer is 1 101/104!
Now for our fourth question! The question is 5 1/3 - 1 2/7.
Okay for the final question! It is 2 4/9+ 5 1/2=??

Today in class we learned how to subtract mixed fractions. Well its kinda like that but if its like (2/3 - 4/3) that. Than that's what we learn today. Today we had 4 questions of homework and I'll show you how too. the questions are.

- 19 3/4 - 10 4/5
- 625 1/2 - 10 3/4
- 4 2/3 - 1 3/4

I'll show you how to do the first and last questions and so they 2 middle question are on your own.

How to do 10 1/2 - 6 7/8


Now When you got the answer improper fraction you must simplify it. The answer when you simplify it is 3 10/16

Now for the last on

How to do 4 2/3 - 1 3/4


Simplify = 2 11/12

Well good luck on the last 2 question and also I really sorry if I'm doing it all wrong and if i am doing it all wrong can someone please tell me or comment on my post.

Fractions is what we did today. We checked our homework and all that, and received homework. 

Homework list:
  • Adding Mixed Fractions/Numbers (Don't have to make pictures)
  • Subtracting Fractions (Must be completed with pictures shown in notebook)

First of all, Mr. Harbeck recommends this method of adding mixed numbers:
1) Add the whole numbers first
2) Add the fractions
3) Then put them together, done.

By using the method above, we solved this simple fraction problem.
3 1/3 + 2 1/4 3+2 = 5
1/3 + 1/4

Today in class, Mr. Harbeck corrected our homework from yesterday. For homework we had 4 questions and 3 word problems. I'm here to show you how to solve the 4 questions and Joysie will show you how to solve the word problems on another post.

First one is 5/9 + 1/3. I'll show you my way of solving it.
My way of solving it is cross multiplying the numbers.







The 2nd question is 1/4 + 2/5.




Third question is 3/8 + 2/3.






Finally, the last question is 7/15 + 2/5.

Today in class, we learned about adding fractions. Mr. Harbeck gave us an example which was, 1/2 + 1/3. He said it equaled 2/5, and asked if it was correct.



This picture says, 1/2 + 1/3 is bigger than
2/5 when you compare it. So it makes it wrong.















What you need to add fractions is common denominators (you get it by multiplying the 2 denominators) and the same size pieces. So for 1/2 + 1/3, the denominator is going to be 6.

Today in class, Mr. Harbeck wasn't there in the morning so we just corrected the homework from yesterday with Mr. Bartz. Well, we learned more about the pythagorean theorum (a2+b2=c2).

For homework we got 4 triangles with a side that is not solved yet but I am only going to explain to you 2 of them.




(The 2's mean squared)

c2-a2=b2

10 2-6 2=b2

100-36=b2

64=b2

find the square root of 64 which is 8 and the way you can find that is by using a calculator.

8=b

(The 2's still stand for squared)

c2-a2=b2

50 2-30 2=b2

2500-900=b2

1600=b2

The square root of this is 40.

40=b

My Pythagoras Post

Pythagoras is a Greek mathematician. He is a vegetarian. He is "UBBER"smart. He is known for the Pythagorean Theorem. No one found any evidence that he existed. He proved that the squares a, and b makes a bigger square which is square c.


Here are the vocabulary words:

Legs: The legs are shorter than the hypotenuse. It creates the rigth angle of the triangle.
Hypotenuse: The hypotenuse is the longest side of a the triangle, and it's also the opposite of the right angle.R.A.T.: This means Right Angle Triangle.
Greek: Someone who came from the country of Greece.
Theorem: It is a theory that has been proven.

Hi......
Today in class we learned a particular math, this math was things you might know from last year or not..... This class was mostly on geometry...... So I'll put the all the stuff we learned in this tiny pictures on the stuff we just learned today in class......




















Okay this is the all mighty square, each side is all 90 degrees for all the right angles, if you know your math it equals 360 degrees if you don't know what it looks like this is a diagram of it... Look at the bottom.................


















So those are the things about a square we learned.......... I think.......... :P
This the things we learned about the triangle of dooom!!!!!!! jk..... Here is a diagram of it.....
If you don't understand my writing of the triangle picture here is a little summary......
Each triangle always has two legs, shorter than the hypotenuse, and it comes out of the right angle.
Hypotenuse longest side of a triangle and opposite of the right angle
And the rest is all straight forward... If you know how to do the math.....
The homework is also straight forward just do the stuff we did in class and put it on your 4 pictures in the middle of the yellow pamphlet...............
